What are NorthCare clinicians and patients saying about our model of care?

Patients and clinicians at our three NorthCare sites in Hamilton have completed a survey on our model of care and the results have been published in the report below.

Here's some of the things they said:

  • Most patients (at least 80 per cent) spoke highly of each aspect of the service and almost all (95 per cent) were happy with their recent visits. They found NorthCare doctors and nurses to be caring, professional and thorough.
  • More patients were using email to communicate with their doctor. They found this convenient and it saved time.
  • The clinical pharmacist that works with doctors and nurses to help with medication queries has been popular with both staff and patients.

The model of care evaluation is a three year process.  The first evaluation report, made public last year, was funded by Midlands Health Network and is available at the bottom of this page.  This second report and a third one, due in June 2014, are being funded by the Ministry of Health.

Midlands Health Network (MHN) is currently trialling a new model of primary care, Integrated Family Health Centres (IFHC), at three Hamilton-based practices. The model seeks to more efficiently and effectively utilise primary healthcare resources by changing the way patients and clinicians interact, and to contribute to the sustainability of the overall healthcare system.

The National Institute of Demographic and Economic Analysis (NIDEA) has undertaken a pilot evaluation of the IFHC Model of Care, as a funded consultancy on behalf of MHN, which provides an initial record of patient and staff experience of the programme changes and can be used as a baseline for further evaluation.

The first objective was to document the patient's experience of, and satisfaction with, the service provided by the IFHCs. For this purpose, a randomized sample of patients was drawn from the register of each practice, stratified by age, gender, ethnicity and deprivation index of place of residence, but limited to those aged eighteen or over, and with four or more consultations in the previous year. A telephone survey was conducted with data obtained from 447 respondents (a response rate of 60%).

The second objective was to understand the impact of working within an IFHC model for GPs, Practice Nurses and practice management staff in terms of personal and professional satisfaction and career progression.
